During my 6 week postpartum visit I was screened for postpartum depression. This is a routine screening most birth mothers will go through, and yet… I have to wonder…

Wouldn’t it make more sense for the partners to also be educated on spotting symptoms of PPD? And that them taking parental leave would reduce the risk of the mother developing PPD?

This routine, one-time round of questioning also neglects the fact that postpartum mood disorders can occur any time within the first year after giving birth.

It also skips over the fact that men can develop PPD as well, and both partners need to know how to identify those symptoms.

For those who may argue that the father is busy "providing", please remember that providing also means providing the best version of yourself.

Should the responsibility really be fully placed on the birthing parent to recognize the symptoms and seek help?

Let’s stop expecting women to be superheroes and shoulder everything by themselves.

Let’s start bringing true meaning to the word partner in the journey of creating and nurturing a new life, together.

We've all been there, but as a female litigator, it is a daily occurrence. Here are portions of a transcript where I was trying to make an argument on the record, and the opposing attorney kept interrupting me. His statements have been redacted from this post, but I could pretty much use any of my transcripts and find this type of back-and-forth. It is that common.

Here's what is so hard about being a litigator: it doesn't matter if you want to yell, cry, or run. You have to stay calm, use your skills to their maximum capacity, and respond professionally so that you remain the most reasonable and professional attorney on the transcript. It takes incredible emotional stamina. Some days, it takes everyone out of me to stay collected, basically running between actual toddlers and adult toddlers. And in litigation, this type of behavior is normalized, and even expected. Clients like to hire “sharks” Yelling, lecturing, interrupting, posturing, intimidating, is generally tolerated by judges. The system rewards bullies.

And here's how it relates to you: often, these lawyers will actually treat me the way their clients treated my clients. There are so many parallels between my litigation work and the underlying workplace disputes. As exhausting as it can be, it is yet another motivator for why I do what I do. And if you’re currently being treated this way at work, I’m right there in it with you. We’re all having this experience in one way or another.

Today, I headed into another deposition. This is what we do as trial attorneys. We dust ourselves off, take a deep breath, and run back to the front lines for our clients. And it is an honor to help them achieve justice.

That doesn’t make it easy. And it’s important to share the lack of decorum in the law. Acting disrespectful as a professional is utterly counterproductive, usually creating a big stressful mess and makes everyone lose time and money. You don’t want to hire a shark. You want to hire a highly-skilled marine dolphin.

Many pregnant clients tell me that they feel so st

Many pregnant clients tell me that they feel so stressed at work that they worry about the impact on their babies, telling me that they worry about all the cortisol in their bodies. They often feel a lot of shame, guilt and anxiety around that, and at the same time they don’t always know how to make a change. They feel like their workplace is not creating an environment where their pregnancies are celebrated or their limitations accepted. While they are creating a new life, they are still held to impossible standards, often higher standards than before pregnancy, as employers often prefer their pregnant workers to finish their work on a faster track to compensate for their upcoming absence.

In these scenarios, women are made to feel that the operational success of their employers is more important than the health and safety of their pregnancies. It is like their employers don’t really SEE them. Even though their bosses will not make direct statements about their pregnancies (which is extremely rare), in a million tiny ways, the pregnancy is definitely received as a nuisance and burden.

If this is you, please know: the success of your pregnancy is more important than the success of your employer’s business operations. Work comes and goes. But babies? We only experience that once or a few times in life. The success of your pregnancy matters to all of us, because we want your baby to have a good start in life. We want your baby to have a happy mother. We want this for all babies, not just those born into the most privileged families.

Your feelings of overwhelm and “too much”-ness, they are not all in your head. They are a normal response to a work environment where you lack support. A work environment that fails to embrace the miraculous yet challenging experience of growing babies.

Make sure you look into your rights. You may have accommodation rights or leave of absence rights. If you feel scared to ask for your rights, I want you to keep in mind that you will never regret advocating for your child. So much of motherhood is advocacy, it is a necessary and essential part of being a parent.

There are many women who mother every day, yet tend to get excluded on Mother’s Day. Mother’s Day is complicated, because motherhood is complicated. This day can be painful to those who want children but don’t have any. I’m sending you love. I also share in the grief of the women who have lost mothers, in whatever form. I’m also thinking about the aunties and girlfriends who were there for us. They were mothering us too. And I’m sending a message of gratitude to the women who cared for my children, specifically nannies and teachers.

Thank you to all the women who held my babies like their own. Without you, none of this *waves at everything* would be here
